Automatic Tools

Automatic tools are designed to accelerate cleanup passes before QC and export.

Prerequisites

  • The target Event Group is selected and contains events.
  • You have a style target (max lines, max chars, max CPS, min gap).
  • You are prepared to validate changes after each automation pass.
  • Auto Format: Format > Auto Format
  • Auto Correct Reading Speed: Timecode > Auto Correct Reading Speed
  • Fix Event Overlaps: Format > Fix Event Overlaps
  • Order Events by Timecode: Format > Order Events by Timecode
  • Auto Replacement: Edit > Auto Replacement
  1. Auto Format text layout.
  2. Auto Correct reading speed/duration/frame gap.
  3. Fix overlaps.
  4. Re-order by timecode.
  5. Apply replacement list(s).
  6. Run QC and fix any remaining edge cases manually.

Workflow 1: Auto Format

  1. Select all events (or only problem events).
  2. Open Format > Auto Format.
  3. Set formatting constraints (max lines/chars, minimum duration, orphan-word behavior).
  4. Apply to selected events.

Validation checks

  • Overlong lines are reduced to configured limits.
  • Line breaks remain semantically readable.
  • No critical dialogue is lost.

Workflow 2: Auto Correct Reading Speed

  1. Open Timecode > Auto Correct Reading Speed.
  2. Set Max CPS, Min Duration, Max Duration, and Minimum Frame Gap.
  3. Enable Fix Overlaps if needed.
  4. Apply and review changed events.

Validation checks

  • CPS is reduced below your configured threshold.
  • Events satisfy duration and frame-gap limits.
  • Timeline remains chronological.

Workflow 3: Fix Event Overlaps + Order by Timecode

  1. Open Format > Fix Event Overlaps.
  2. Run Format > Order Events by Timecode immediately after.
  3. Spot-check beginning, midpoint, and end of sequence.

Validation checks

  • Adjacent events no longer overlap.
  • Event list order matches timeline order.

Workflow 4: Automatic Replacement

  1. Open Edit > Auto Replacement.
  2. Select or create a replacement list.
  3. Add shortform → replacement mappings (acronyms, brand names, recurring terms).
  4. Apply replacements and manually verify context-sensitive entries.

Validation checks

  • Terms are normalized consistently across the project.
  • No false replacements in names, IDs, or URLs.

Troubleshooting

Auto Format over-splits lines

  • Increase max chars slightly and re-apply to only affected events.
  • Use manual line breaks for speaker/rhythm-sensitive lines.

Auto Correct changes event timing too aggressively

  • Re-run with smaller parameter deltas.
  • Disable overlap fixing temporarily if it causes chain shifts.

Replacements produce incorrect words

  • Keep list entries highly specific.
  • Remove ambiguous shortforms and re-run only targeted ranges.
