*Closed Caption Embedding requires the Pro or Enterprise version of Closed Caption Creator. There is a flat rate cost of $2.00 per file + $0.40/GB uploaded.

No transcode or re-encoding of the video takes place, so that source and target files will match.

Can Closed Caption Creator read and write SCC and MCC files?

Yes. Scenarist Closed Caption (.scc) and MacCaption 608/708 (.mcc) are both supported for reading and writing, along with EBU-STL and over 30 other subtitle formats. Note that SCC, MCC, and EBU-STL exports require a Pro or Enterprise plan, not Starter.

Frequently asked questions

Format support questions

Answers about supported caption, subtitle, transcript, video, and audio formats, plus which export capabilities require the desktop application.

Yes. The format list includes read and write support for Netflix TT Captions (.xml), Netflix TT Subtitles (.xml), and Netflix DFXP (.dfxp). Related timed-text standards such as TTML, SMPTE-TTML, IMSC, and EBU-TT are supported for both reading and writing as well.

Read-only formats include Canvass SST Project (.sdb), Vitac (.vni), and speech-to-text JSON transcripts from Google STT, Assembly AI, Deepgram, Rev AI, Voicegain, and Speechmatics. The As-Broadcast Dialog List (.docx, .csv) is write-only, so it can be exported but not imported.

Both the desktop and web versions support playback of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, HEVC (H.265), VP8 and VP9 (WebM), AV1, and Ogg Theora. Supported audio codecs include PCM WAV, MP3, AAC, Vorbis, Opus, and FLAC on both the desktop and web versions as well.

Three export capabilities are desktop-only: audio description export to WAV (up to 96KHz), MP3, or FLAC; video export with burnt-in subtitles in H.264 up to 4K; and embedded EIA-608/708 closed captioning with match-source support for MOV, MXF, MPEG, MP4, and more.

Closed Caption Creator offers custom profiles for formats not currently in the supported list. The development team can assist in adding support for specific formats on request, and the format support page directs users to contact the company to discuss the requirement.

Plaintext (.txt), Microsoft Word (.docx), and comma-separated values (.csv) transcripts are all supported for reading and writing. LMS Transcript (.docx) files are also supported both ways, and broadcast-style As-Broadcast Dialog Lists can be exported to .docx or .csv as write-only files.
