This documentation follows a latest-only model: pages describe current behavior, and this changelog summarizes notable updates.

Changelog policy​

  • Capture major workflow/UI/feature updates that affect user operations.
  • Document deprecations with the replacement workflow.
  • Keep route/slugs stable where possible; note breaking navigation changes when unavoidable.
  • Keep granular implementation history in source control while this page highlights user-impacting deltas.

Assembly AI voices and a new default voice​

  • Assembly AI is a new cloud voice provider in the Virtual Voice Manager. Its voices cover English (US, UK and Australian), Spanish (Mexico), German, French and Portuguese (Brazil).
  • New Audio Description projects and event groups now use Kyla, an American English Assembly AI voice, as the default voice. Previously the default was a male Google voice.
  • Existing projects keep the voices already assigned to their events.
  • Assembly AI voices are billed per character in the same way as Google, Amazon and Microsoft voices. Use Speed to adjust their pacing.

Required user action: None. To keep using a different voice in new projects, assign it from the Voice Manager.

Saved prompts​

  • Click the bookmark button in the AI Assistant message box to save the prompt you've typed, for example "Fix all reading rate issues but don't change subtitle text".
  • Saved prompts are listed in the same menu and on a new chat. Click one to put it back in the message box, in the mode it was saved in (Ask or Agent). It isn't sent until you click Send.
  • Remove a prompt with ×. To change one, put it in the message box, change the text and save it again.
  • Saved prompts are stored with your account, so they're available in every project and on every device you sign in to.

Deep mode for the AI Agent​

  • In Agent mode, a Standard / Deep switch appears under the message box. Deep runs the agent on Claude Opus for harder tasks and uses credits about twice as fast. Standard stays the default.
  • Replies made in Deep mode are tagged Deep in the chat. Your choice is remembered on this device.

AI Assistant with Ask and Agent modes​

  • A new AI Assistant panel opens from the sparkle icon at the right end of the toolbar, or with Ctrl+L (Cmd+L on Mac). It needs an internet connection.
  • Ask mode answers how-to questions from the user guide and a read-only summary of your project, with links to its sources. Free includes 10 questions a day, trials 15, and paid plans 50. Limits reset at 00:00 UTC.
  • Agent mode (Pro and Enterprise) edits the open project: fixing QC and reading-rate issues, adjusting timing and gaps, search and replace, adding notes, and translating into a new linked Event Group. Each change is shown as a card with Review and Undo, deletions and changes to more than 25 events ask for approval first, and everything the agent changes for one prompt undoes with a single Ctrl+Z.
  • Chats are saved per project on your device. Checkpoints let you Restore the project to before any message, or Edit & restore to rewrite a message.

Prompt-based translation with KNP guides​

  • AI Tools > Automatic Translation has a new Advanced Options section, which also holds Include Formatting.
  • With Anthropic, OpenAi, Gemini Pro, or DeepL, you can attach a KNP Terminology Guide (team accounts) so names and key phrases use your approved translations, and add Translation Instructions for tone, audience, or style.
  • KNP guides have a new Translation Notes field for style rules that apply every time the guide is used for translation.
  • Anthropic, OpenAi, and Gemini Pro first read the whole transcript and write a short context brief, so idioms and recurring terms are translated consistently instead of line by line.

Required user action: None. To use a KNP guide for translation, add the target languages and their translations to the guide in the KNP Terminology Manager.

AD control track (WHP 198)​

  • The Audio Description export (File Export window) can now write a WHP 198 control track: a 2-channel, 48 kHz, 24-bit WAV with the AD narration on channel 1 and fade and pan data on channel 2, as required by UK and many European broadcasters.
  • Choose 2-channel WAV: AD narration + control (WHP 198) from AD Control Track in Output Options, and set Programme fade (dB), Fade down (ms) and Fade up (ms).
  • The exporter checks its own control signal before saving the file.

AI Agent included with Pro, and adding users​

  • The AI Agent is included with every Pro and Enterprise plan, including plans from before the current pricing, with a monthly allowance of credits. Extra credits are billed with your plan; set a monthly limit in Help > Manage Subscription. The Agent is no longer sold as a separate plugin.
  • Team Management shows how many users your plan includes and how many are left. On Pro, the account owner can add users from there for $10/month each (prorated). Teams on older plans keep unlimited users.

Required user action: None.

Areas affected: Licensing, offline activation

Lifetime licences​

  • Starter Lifetime ($2,000) and Pro Lifetime ($3,000) are one-time purchases of the desktop editor for one user on up to 2 computers, with 12 months of updates. Cloud and AI features aren't included.
  • The offline activation screen now has a Licence key option, and Help > Licence shows your licence, updates date and computers.
  • Offline activation codes from Help > Offline Activation are now signed codes, and are only issued to active paid subscriptions. Codes for version 1.8.50 and earlier are still shown under Code for version 1.8.50 or earlier.

Required user action: None. Existing offline activations keep working until their code expires.

Modern MT removed​

  • Modern MT is no longer a translation service provider, because the service is shutting down. Use Lara AI or another provider.
  • If Modern MT was your saved default, Automatic Translation opens on Lara AI with English (US) → French (France) selected.

Required user action: Check your source and target languages the first time you open Automatic Translation. Lara AI uses locale codes such as en-US and fr-FR.

New plans: Free, Starter and Pro​

  • A new Free plan: the caption editor with import of every subtitle format, SRT, VTT and TXT export, and 10 AI Assistant questions a day. Every other export (broadcast formats, burnt-in video, transcripts, dialogue lists, images) asks you to upgrade.
  • Starter and Pro trials no longer end in a lockout. When a trial ends without a subscription, the account moves to Free.
  • During a trial, SRT, VTT, TXT and burnt-in video export without the TRIAL text; other formats still carry it.
  • Starter is $35/month and is for one user. Pro is $75/month, includes 3 users ($10/month per extra user) and the AI Agent with 500 credits a month.
  • The Audio Description Plugin is $50/month for the whole team.
  • Tools that are not in your plan now show an upgrade prompt instead of being hidden or failing.
  • Team Management shows seats used on Pro, and stops new invites when all seats are taken.

Required user action: None. Existing subscribers keep their current price and features. See Subscription Management.

  • SCC, MCC, RAW, and EBU-STL subtitle export is available on Starter as well as Pro and Enterprise.

Simpler Automatic AD and Shot Description settings​

  • The AI model, transcription provider, dialogue Event Group, Avoid Duplicates and Commercial content options have been removed. Claude writes the descriptions with Gemini and OpenAI as automatic backups, dialogue is always transcribed with Speechmatics, duplicates are always avoided, and on-screen text and disclaimers are always included in the AD script.
  • The settings are now grouped as Scene Description Settings, Audio Description Settings, Context & Prompting and Segmentation. Description Length is now Shot Description Length, and Bypass dialogue has moved to Audio Description Settings.
  • New Minimum Event Gap setting keeps a minimum time between AD events, so long dialogue breaks are no longer filled with back-to-back descriptions.
  • Segmentation now uses a range slider, like Video Export.
  • Scene descriptions now use the dialogue spoken during each shot, and are imported into a Scene Description Event Group (previously Shot Changes).
  • A new AI quality-review pass flags duplicated or misplaced descriptions as failed approval, with a note explaining why.
  • Jobs are now billed on the processed segment rather than the full video length: $1.00 per minute, 3-minute minimum.

Required user action: None. Older app versions keep working with their existing settings.

Project Incode is used when importing subtitle files​

  • When the Project Incode is set to a value greater than 00:00:00:00, imported subtitle and caption files now have the Project Incode subtracted instead of an automatically detected whole-hour offset. For example, with a Project Incode of 09:59:50:00, an SRT cue at 10:00:04,220 is now placed about 14.22 seconds into the media (previously about 4.22 seconds).
  • The Incode option in the Subtitle Import and Translation Import windows now defaults to the Project Incode when one is set, instead of the last value used.
  • When the Project Incode is 00:00:00:00, the automatic offset and the prompt to update the Project Incode work as before.

Required user action: None. Use the Timecode Offset tool if an imported file needs further adjustment.

Daikin Scenarist Script profile for Image Subtitles​

  • Desktop File > Export > Image Subtitles now has an Export Profile control. BDN (Blu-ray) is the previous PNG + BDN XML package. Scenarist Script (DVD) writes 4-color TIFF stills and a Daikin Scenarist .sst file for DVD authoring.
  • Premiere FCP 7 XML is still written for every profile as {scriptName}_fcp.xml.
  • Scenarist export is limited to NTSC SD and PAL SD, uses a white background, and names images {prefix}.0001.tif.

Required user action: Optional — choose Scenarist Script (DVD) when delivering to a Daikin Scenarist / DVD authoring workflow.

Separate Audio Dubbing Export window​

  • File → Export… includes an Audio Dubbing card next to Audio Description. The Audio Dubbing Export window lists Audio Dubbing groups only.
  • Background Stem defaults to the loaded music-and-effects stem. If none is selected, mixdown uses project media. Audio stems remain preview-only until you choose them in this field.
  • Mix Preset and Loudness Profile default to None. Export Video uses the loaded project video. Extended AD is not shown.
  • Audio Description Export is unchanged except that its Event Group list is Audio Description groups only, and Program Audio (Optional) no longer auto-fills from a loaded background stem.

Required user action: None. Audio Dubbing export requires the desktop app, the Audio Description plugin, and an online session.

Compact Voice Manager cards and Amazon de-duplication​

  • Voice cards are a single compact row: a shortened name (locale prefix omitted; full name on hover), a meta line with gender, engine or tier, and locale, and icon-only play and pin controls.
  • Pinned cards use a teal highlight. Unpin from the pin icon on the card, or hover a row in the Pinned Voices column and select the remove control.
  • Amazon Polly voices that exist on several engines (Standard, Neural, Generative) now appear once, using the highest-quality engine. Existing pins on a lower engine still work; the grid only offers the best engine.

Premiere FCP XML from Image Subtitle Export​

  • Desktop File > Export > Image Subtitles still writes PNG stills and Blu-Ray BDN XML, and now also writes Premiere FCP 7 XML named {scriptName}_fcp.xml (for example untitled_fcp.xml).
  • Import that FCP XML in Adobe Premiere Pro with File > Import to get a sequence of PNG stills at the subtitle in/out times. Keep the XML beside the PNGs; paths in the file are absolute.

Required user action: Optional — use File > Import on the *_fcp.xml file in Premiere. Do not import the BDN XML into Premiere.

Simplified transcription after import​

  • After you create a new project with media or import media, Closed Caption Creator asks whether you want to automatically transcribe that file.
  • Choosing Yes opens the Automatic Transcription dialog (provider, optional KNP guide, source language). After Submit Job, the same dialog stays open, tracks progress, and imports the transcript when the job passes.
  • You no longer have to open AI Tools > Transcription Import for that first import. Closing the dialog while the job is running still leaves the cloud job running; import later from the dashboard.
  • AI Tools > Automatic Transcription uses the same wait-and-import behavior. Batch Transcription and the Transcription Import dashboard are unchanged.

Required user action: None. Optional — after import, choose Yes then Submit Job, and leave the dialog open until captions appear.

Visual Watermark and Audio Dubbing​

  • Team admins can enable a Visual Watermark from Edit → Options → Watermark. The overlay can show date and time, the viewer's email, IP address, and custom text. It appears on the player only and is not burned into media or any export.
  • Audio Dubbing is a new Event Group type (Audio Description plugin). Link captions or a translation, assign voices, render TTS of the dubbed text, mix over a background stem, and export from File → Export → Audio Dubbing.
  • A new getting-started video for Automatic Transcription is included on the transcription guide.

Required user action: None. Watermark settings require an online team admin. Audio Dubbing export requires the desktop app, the Audio Description plugin, and an online session.

Embed Captions: Multiple videos per submission​

  • The Embed Captions window now accepts several video files at once. This is designed for deliverables that share the same dialogue across versions, such as infomercials where the closing graphic or telephone number differs by market.
  • Each selected video is submitted, priced, and billed as its own embed job. The Pricing Summary shows the cost of each video and the combined total.
  • Each video has its own Custom Name and upload progress. If an upload fails, the other videos continue, and the failed videos stay in the list so you can retry them.
  • Downloaded files now keep the original video file name with a cc_ prefix (for example, Promo_Texas.mov downloads as cc_Promo_Texas.mov). Completion emails name the original file so you can match each email to its version.

Required user action: None. To use the new workflow, select more than one file in the Video Files field.

Redesigned Voice Manager and ElevenLabs Eleven v4​

  • The Virtual Voice Manager has a new Sources list: All cloud voices, Google, Gemini, Amazon, Microsoft, ElevenLabs, and Offline. ElevenLabs and Offline voices no longer appear as entries in the Language dropdown.
  • The voice browser adds search, an All / Male / Female toggle, and redesigned voice cards with tier badges and one-click Pin.
  • The ElevenLabs source shows your account's voices with their type and labels. Without an API key it offers a Connect ElevenLabs button that opens Options → Integrations, and it tells you when your key is rejected.
  • ElevenLabs voices now support Eleven v4. Each event has a model dropdown (Eleven v4, Multilingual v2, Flash v2.5) in the Event List. The Rate slider appears only for models that support it.
  • Newly assigned ElevenLabs voices default to Eleven v4. Existing events keep Multilingual v2 until you change the model.

Required user action: None. To use Eleven v4 on existing events, select it in the event's model dropdown and re-render.

Text-to-speech voice catalog update​

  • Google Gemini voices are now available in the Voice Manager under the new Gemini provider filter. These voices use the Gemini 2.5 Pro text-to-speech model.
  • Amazon Polly voices were refreshed to the current Standard, Neural, and Generative voices. Long-form voices are not included.
  • Microsoft Azure now offers the full set of Neural voices, plus HD Flash and DragonHD voices.
  • Google Studio voices and Deepgram text-to-speech voices were removed. Projects and pinned voices that use them now render with a comparable Google Chirp 3 HD voice in the same language and gender. Deepgram is still available for transcription.
  • Gemini and DragonHD voices set their own pacing, so the Rate slider and Automatic Rate are not available for them.

Required user action: Optional. Re-render events that used a Studio or Deepgram voice if you want to audition the replacement voice, or pick a new voice in the Voice Manager.

Translation File Import​

File → Import → Translation imports a source subtitle file and a target subtitle file as a linked pair: a source subtitle Event Group plus a Translation Event Group that shows source and target text. This is separate from AI Tools → Translation Import, which imports completed automatic-translation jobs.

Required user action: Optional — use File → Import → Translation when a vendor or archive provides both language files instead of importing each file as a standalone subtitle track.

System and Word spell-check engines​

Spell Check in Quick Tools still includes Local (bundled dictionaries) and OpenAI (online). The desktop application can also offer System (Windows or macOS operating-system spelling) and Word (Microsoft Word proofing on Windows when Word is installed, including grammar). System and Word do not appear in the web app or on Linux. Web users continue to use Local and OpenAI only.

Required user action: Optional — on the Windows or macOS desktop app, restart Closed Caption Creator if you do not see the new engines, then choose System or Word in the Spell Check engine dropdown.

QC & Review tab redesign and Automatic Fixes​

The QC & Review QuickTools tab now lists failed events as expandable cards instead of two side-by-side lists. Errors are categorised as Technical, Timing, Content, or Review, with filter chips and counts. Automatic Fixes can correct a single error, all fixable errors on an event, or selected issue types across the event group (Fix All). The error list is vertically resizable so it stays clear of the timeline. Report still exports CSV and now includes a Category column. The toolbar Select Errors control has been removed; Ignore is on each event card.

Required user action: None. Optional — after Start, use Fix All to choose which issue types to apply, then confirm remaining Manual issues by hand.

Metadata Merge properties​

Metadata Merge can combine source text, positioning, writing mode, style, recipients, voice (including rate and pitch), forced narrative, notes check, reply check, and approval, in addition to the existing notes, reply, tags, speakers, and Event Group metadata options. The tool still creates a new Event Group from a primary group's events and timing. Voice merge does not copy audio files and marks AD events as needing a new render.

Required user action: None. Optional — open Event Group Options → Combine & Compare → Metadata Merge when you need to pull properties from another group without overwriting the primary group's caption text or timing.

Filter events by track​

The Event List filter panel includes a Track row next to Lines. Toggle No Track and A–D to show only matching events. Nothing selected means no track filter; several selected values are OR’d. List View and Table View stay in sync, and Shift-click / Select All apply only to the filtered set. Switching Event Groups clears filters.

Required user action: None. Optional — open the funnel icon above the Event List and use the Track toggles to isolate a track while editing.

Remove SDH color formatting and dialog layout​

Remove SDH now includes Remove color formatting, which strips inline text color and background color without deleting the dialogue — useful for European files that identify speakers by color. The dialog groups options under Text removal and Formatting. Scope is chosen in the footer as Apply to: All events or Selected events only (with a live selection count), instead of an Apply to All checkbox among the categories. Remove SDH stays disabled until at least one option is checked.

Required user action: None. Existing saved category checkboxes still apply; re-enable Remove color formatting if you need it. Select events before opening the dialog if you intend to process a subset.

Compare Event Groups property picker and merges​

Compare Event Groups now lets you choose which event properties to diff (timing, text, source text, style, position, voice, notes, and others). Those checkboxes also drive the fields shown on each event card. Notes and replies still appear on a card whenever they have content, even if those properties are not being compared. Merges copy only changed, enabled properties: per-property → B / → A, event-level A → B / B → A, and header Apply All. Added and deleted events can be copied into the other group. CSV export includes notes and reply columns.

Required user action: None. Optional — use Compare Options to limit the diff to the fields you care about; choices are saved in the browser.

Lara AI provider and Modern MT sunset​

Automatic Translation now includes Lara AI as a service provider, with locale-specific source and target language codes such as en-US and fr-FR. Modern MT remains available until December 2026. Selecting Modern MT shows an in-modal warning recommending Lara AI or another provider.

Required user action: Prefer Lara AI or another remaining provider for new translation jobs. Existing Modern MT jobs continue to work until sunset.

Event Group standards presets​

New Project, New Event Group, and Event Group Settings now include a Preset dropdown above the Realtime Error Detection fields. Built-in North American Broadcast and European Teletext presets fill the eight thresholds (CPS, WPM, characters per line, lines, min/max duration, overlap, illegal 608 characters). You can save custom presets, overwrite a custom preset by saving under the same name, and delete custom presets from the dropdown. Custom presets also appear on the Standards tab of Edit → Export Presets. Last-used values still prefill the form when no named preset is selected.

Required user action: None. Optional — choose a built-in preset when creating a project or Event Group, or save a custom preset for a delivery specification you use often.

Collapse Position and Caption Style​

List View subtitle events can collapse the caption style dropdown and position grid into a slim column of informational icons. Enable Collapse Position and Caption Style under Edit > Options > Editor (Editor List). Icons show vertical position (top, middle, bottom, or a custom line) and caption style (Pop-On, Paint-On, or Roll-Up); hover for the exact value. The icons are display-only. Editing still works from Table View, the Format menu, and toolbar position controls, or by turning the option off. The setting is off by default and is saved with local editor preferences.

Required user action: Optional — enable the option if you want more width for event text, speakers, recipients, and tags.

Areas affected: Notes, CCSL Export

Notes copy/paste and CCSL line breaks​

Copy, Cut, and Paste now use the system clipboard when a Notes, Reply, or other text field is focused, so shot descriptions can be copied from one Event's Notes field into another without being treated as caption events. CCSL Word export preserves line breaks entered in Notes across all templates (Default, Condensed, Style 5A, Technicolor, and Starter).

Insert Marker + Comment shortcut​

The Media Player shortcut group now includes Insert Marker + Comment. When assigned, it inserts a marker into the selected marker list at the current playhead and opens the same comment prompt used by the Markers Quick Tool. Insert Marker continues to insert a marker with no comment. Both shortcuts are unassigned by default.

Required user action: Optional — assign a key command in Edit > Shortcut Keys.

Project due date, priority, and sortable table columns​

Storage Explorer project records (projects, team projects, and work orders) now support an optional Due Date and Priority (1–10, higher is more urgent). Both are edited from the Information panel action toolbar and appear in the property list. Table view includes Priority and Due Date columns; click either header to sort ascending or descending. My Tasks shows these fields so assignees can prioritise their queue.

Required user action: None. Optional — set due dates and priority on assigned records from the Information panel.

Lock and unlock Event Groups​

Each Event Group can be locked from Event Group Options → General → Lock. While locked, text, timing, structure, Timeline drag/resize, and group transforms are blocked. Notes, replies, Mark Complete toggles, and Event approval remain editable so reviewers can annotate without changing the deliverable. Unlock from the same menu (Unlock, highlighted when the group is locked). A lock icon appears on the Event Group tab while locked.

Required user action: None. Optional — lock an Event Group before handing a project to a reviewer.

Scroll to Zoom Editor option​

Edit > Options > Editor now includes Scroll to Zoom under Timeline settings (on by default). Disable it to stop mouse-wheel / trackpad scrolling from changing timeline zoom — useful with Magic Mouse or trackpad accidental touches. When off, vertical scrolling pans the timeline instead; Zoom In / Zoom Out shortcuts and toolbar buttons still work.

Required user action: Optional — turn off Scroll to Zoom if accidental scroll gestures keep changing your timeline zoom.

Iconik publish options and asset metadata​

Round-trip Iconik sessions now support additional publish and metadata actions:

  • Publish marker metadata in the Iconik Publish panel sends current marker lists to Iconik as timed MARKER segments, replacing only segments previously published by Closed Caption Creator.
  • Request review after publish creates an Iconik approval request after a successful publish, with optional users, groups, external emails, and minimum approvals.
  • Iconik Asset Metadata in the toolbar opens a dedicated panel to view and update Iconik metadata views for the open asset (separate from local project metadata under Edit > Options).

Table View for Events​

The Event editor now supports Table View alongside List View. Use the List / Table toggle in the project info bar above the Event List to switch layouts. Table View shows Events in a spreadsheet-style grid with customizable columns (show/hide and reorder), inline editing for text, notes, reply, timecodes, alignment, style, and approval flags, plus wrapping for long notes and reply text. Preferences for view mode and column layout are saved locally.

Required user action: None. Optional — switch to Table View and use Columns to enable fields such as Notes, Reply, or Original for your workflow.

Pre-Render Frame Cache for Timeline Film Strip​

On slower machines, the Timeline Film Strip can feel slow the first time you select an event while frames are extracted. AI Tools > Pre-Render Frame Cache (desktop, local video) batch-generates thumbnails for all event starts so the strip loads from cache afterward. Enable the Film Strip under Edit > Options > Editor.

Required user action: If you use the Film Strip on a slower system, run Pre-Render Frame Cache once after your events are in place.

Teletext Spacing preview option​

Edit → Options → Display now includes Teletext Spacing. When enabled, the Closed Caption preview reserves character columns for teletext colour and background control codes so left-aligned styled captions align more closely with EBU-STL teletext / on-air presentation. The option is preview-only and is saved with your local display defaults.

Required user action: For teletext authoring workflows, enable Teletext Spacing and save Display Settings if you need the preview to account for colour/background control columns.

New Timeline​

The interactive Timeline has been rebuilt with improved performance, a minimap, multi-track support, and a floating toolbar. Use Show/Hide Timeline in the top-right toolbar to toggle the panel. See Using the Timeline.

Required user action: Replace any Set as Track 2 workflow with the new Add to timeline menu on the Timeline toolbar. See AD Event Groups and AD Template Workflow.

Export Speaker Metrics​

Export a Word document summarizing event and word counts per speaker from the Speakers tab in Quick Tools. Open the panel menu and select Export Speaker Metrics.

Embed Captions: Roll-Up and Paint-On Support​

Embed Captions now encodes Pop-On, Roll-Up, and Paint-On display styles into embedded 608/708 caption data. Set styles per event via Format > Caption Style. Additional 608 compliance checks apply at export time.

Video Export: Pop-On Only​

Video Export (burnt-in subtitles) renders all events using the Pop-On display model. Roll-Up and Paint-On events appear as static text blocks for the full event duration.
