Version History and Changelog

This documentation follows a latest-only model: pages describe current behavior, and this changelog summarizes notable updates.

Changelog policy​

  • Capture major workflow/UI/feature updates that affect user operations.
  • Document deprecations with the replacement workflow.
  • Keep route/slugs stable where possible; note breaking navigation changes when unavoidable.
  • Keep granular implementation history in source control while this page highlights user-impacting deltas.

Release note quality checklist​

  • Wording reflects current app behavior.

Areas affected: File Import, Translation Event Groups

Translation File Import​

File → Import → Translation imports a source subtitle file and a target subtitle file as a linked pair: a source subtitle Event Group plus a Translation Event Group that shows source and target text. This is separate from AI Tools → Translation Import, which imports completed automatic-translation jobs.

Required user action: Optional — use File → Import → Translation when a vendor or archive provides both language files instead of importing each file as a standalone subtitle track.

System and Word spell-check engines​

Spell Check in Quick Tools still includes Local (bundled dictionaries) and OpenAI (online). The desktop application can also offer System (Windows or macOS operating-system spelling) and Word (Microsoft Word proofing on Windows when Word is installed, including grammar). System and Word do not appear in the web app or on Linux. Web users continue to use Local and OpenAI only.

Required user action: Optional — on the Windows or macOS desktop app, restart Closed Caption Creator if you do not see the new engines, then choose System or Word in the Spell Check engine dropdown.

QC & Review tab redesign and Automatic Fixes​

The QC & Review QuickTools tab now lists failed events as expandable cards instead of two side-by-side lists. Errors are categorised as Technical, Timing, Content, or Review, with filter chips and counts. Automatic Fixes can correct a single error, all fixable errors on an event, or selected issue types across the event group (Fix All). The error list is vertically resizable so it stays clear of the timeline. Report still exports CSV and now includes a Category column. The toolbar Select Errors control has been removed; Ignore is on each event card.

Required user action: None. Optional — after Start, use Fix All to choose which issue types to apply, then confirm remaining Manual issues by hand.

Metadata Merge properties​

Metadata Merge can combine source text, positioning, writing mode, style, recipients, voice (including rate and pitch), forced narrative, notes check, reply check, and approval, in addition to the existing notes, reply, tags, speakers, and Event Group metadata options. The tool still creates a new Event Group from a primary group's events and timing. Voice merge does not copy audio files and marks AD events as needing a new render.

Required user action: None. Optional — open Event Group Options → Combine & Compare → Metadata Merge when you need to pull properties from another group without overwriting the primary group's caption text or timing.

Filter events by track​

The Event List filter panel includes a Track row next to Lines. Toggle No Track and A–D to show only matching events. Nothing selected means no track filter; several selected values are OR’d. List View and Table View stay in sync, and Shift-click / Select All apply only to the filtered set. Switching Event Groups clears filters.

Required user action: None. Optional — open the funnel icon above the Event List and use the Track toggles to isolate a track while editing.

Remove SDH color formatting and dialog layout​

Remove SDH now includes Remove color formatting, which strips inline text color and background color without deleting the dialogue — useful for European files that identify speakers by color. The dialog groups options under Text removal and Formatting. Scope is chosen in the footer as Apply to: All events or Selected events only (with a live selection count), instead of an Apply to All checkbox among the categories. Remove SDH stays disabled until at least one option is checked.

Required user action: None. Existing saved category checkboxes still apply; re-enable Remove color formatting if you need it. Select events before opening the dialog if you intend to process a subset.

Compare Event Groups property picker and merges​

Compare Event Groups now lets you choose which event properties to diff (timing, text, source text, style, position, voice, notes, and others). Those checkboxes also drive the fields shown on each event card. Notes and replies still appear on a card whenever they have content, even if those properties are not being compared. Merges copy only changed, enabled properties: per-property → B / → A, event-level A → B / B → A, and header Apply All. Added and deleted events can be copied into the other group. CSV export includes notes and reply columns.

Required user action: None. Optional — use Compare Options to limit the diff to the fields you care about; choices are saved in the browser.

Lara AI provider and Modern MT sunset​

Automatic Translation now includes Lara AI as a service provider, with locale-specific source and target language codes such as en-US and fr-FR. Modern MT remains available until December 2026. Selecting Modern MT shows an in-modal warning recommending Lara AI or another provider.

Required user action: Prefer Lara AI or another remaining provider for new translation jobs. Existing Modern MT jobs continue to work until sunset.

Event Group standards presets​

New Project, New Event Group, and Event Group Settings now include a Preset dropdown above the Realtime Error Detection fields. Built-in North American Broadcast and European Teletext presets fill the eight thresholds (CPS, WPM, characters per line, lines, min/max duration, overlap, illegal 608 characters). You can save custom presets, overwrite a custom preset by saving under the same name, and delete custom presets from the dropdown. Custom presets also appear on the Standards tab of Edit → Export Presets. Last-used values still prefill the form when no named preset is selected.

Required user action: None. Optional — choose a built-in preset when creating a project or Event Group, or save a custom preset for a delivery specification you use often.

Collapse Position and Caption Style​

List View subtitle events can collapse the caption style dropdown and position grid into a slim column of informational icons. Enable Collapse Position and Caption Style under Edit > Options > Editor (Editor List). Icons show vertical position (top, middle, bottom, or a custom line) and caption style (Pop-On, Paint-On, or Roll-Up); hover for the exact value. The icons are display-only. Editing still works from Table View, the Format menu, and toolbar position controls, or by turning the option off. The setting is off by default and is saved with local editor preferences.

Required user action: Optional — enable the option if you want more width for event text, speakers, recipients, and tags.

Areas affected: Notes, CCSL Export

Notes copy/paste and CCSL line breaks​

Copy, Cut, and Paste now use the system clipboard when a Notes, Reply, or other text field is focused, so shot descriptions can be copied from one Event's Notes field into another without being treated as caption events. CCSL Word export preserves line breaks entered in Notes across all templates (Default, Condensed, Style 5A, Technicolor, and Starter).

Insert Marker + Comment shortcut​

The Media Player shortcut group now includes Insert Marker + Comment. When assigned, it inserts a marker into the selected marker list at the current playhead and opens the same comment prompt used by the Markers Quick Tool. Insert Marker continues to insert a marker with no comment. Both shortcuts are unassigned by default.

Required user action: Optional — assign a key command in Edit > Shortcut Keys.

Project due date, priority, and sortable table columns​

Storage Explorer project records (projects, team projects, and work orders) now support an optional Due Date and Priority (1–10, higher is more urgent). Both are edited from the Information panel action toolbar and appear in the property list. Table view includes Priority and Due Date columns; click either header to sort ascending or descending. My Tasks shows these fields so assignees can prioritise their queue.

Required user action: None. Optional — set due dates and priority on assigned records from the Information panel.

Lock and unlock Event Groups​

Each Event Group can be locked from Event Group Options → General → Lock. While locked, text, timing, structure, Timeline drag/resize, and group transforms are blocked. Notes, replies, Mark Complete toggles, and Event approval remain editable so reviewers can annotate without changing the deliverable. Unlock from the same menu (Unlock, highlighted when the group is locked). A lock icon appears on the Event Group tab while locked.

Required user action: None. Optional — lock an Event Group before handing a project to a reviewer.

Scroll to Zoom Editor option​

Edit > Options > Editor now includes Scroll to Zoom under Timeline settings (on by default). Disable it to stop mouse-wheel / trackpad scrolling from changing timeline zoom — useful with Magic Mouse or trackpad accidental touches. When off, vertical scrolling pans the timeline instead; Zoom In / Zoom Out shortcuts and toolbar buttons still work.

Required user action: Optional — turn off Scroll to Zoom if accidental scroll gestures keep changing your timeline zoom.

Iconik publish options and asset metadata​

Round-trip Iconik sessions now support additional publish and metadata actions:

  • Publish marker metadata in the Iconik Publish panel sends current marker lists to Iconik as timed MARKER segments, replacing only segments previously published by Closed Caption Creator.
  • Request review after publish creates an Iconik approval request after a successful publish, with optional users, groups, external emails, and minimum approvals.
  • Iconik Asset Metadata in the toolbar opens a dedicated panel to view and update Iconik metadata views for the open asset (separate from local project metadata under Edit > Options).

Required user action: Ensure your Iconik App ID and Auth Token in Edit > Options > Integrations include segment, approval-request, and metadata permissions for the actions you use.

Table View for Events​

The Event editor now supports Table View alongside List View. Use the List / Table toggle in the project info bar above the Event List to switch layouts. Table View shows Events in a spreadsheet-style grid with customizable columns (show/hide and reorder), inline editing for text, notes, reply, timecodes, alignment, style, and approval flags, plus wrapping for long notes and reply text. Preferences for view mode and column layout are saved locally.

Required user action: None. Optional — switch to Table View and use Columns to enable fields such as Notes, Reply, or Original for your workflow.

Pre-Render Frame Cache for Timeline Film Strip​

On slower machines, the Timeline Film Strip can feel slow the first time you select an event while frames are extracted. AI Tools > Pre-Render Frame Cache (desktop, local video) batch-generates thumbnails for all event starts so the strip loads from cache afterward. Enable the Film Strip under Edit > Options > Editor.

Required user action: If you use the Film Strip on a slower system, run Pre-Render Frame Cache once after your events are in place.

Teletext Spacing preview option​

Edit → Options → Display now includes Teletext Spacing. When enabled, the Closed Caption preview reserves character columns for teletext colour and background control codes so left-aligned styled captions align more closely with EBU-STL teletext / on-air presentation. The option is preview-only and is saved with your local display defaults.

Required user action: For teletext authoring workflows, enable Teletext Spacing and save Display Settings if you need the preview to account for colour/background control columns.

New Timeline​

The interactive Timeline has been rebuilt with improved performance, a minimap, multi-track support, and a floating toolbar. Use Show/Hide Timeline in the top-right toolbar to toggle the panel. See Using the Timeline.

Required user action: Replace any Set as Track 2 workflow with the new Add to timeline menu on the Timeline toolbar. See AD Event Groups and AD Template Workflow.

Export Speaker Metrics​

Export a Word document summarizing event and word counts per speaker from the Speakers tab in Quick Tools. Open the panel menu and select Export Speaker Metrics.

Embed Captions: Roll-Up and Paint-On Support​

Embed Captions now encodes Pop-On, Roll-Up, and Paint-On display styles into embedded 608/708 caption data. Set styles per event via Format > Caption Style. Additional 608 compliance checks apply at export time.

Video Export: Pop-On Only​

Video Export (burnt-in subtitles) renders all events using the Pop-On display model. Roll-Up and Paint-On events appear as static text blocks for the full event duration.
